Antonelli Wins at Madring as Hamilton Retires from Fourth

Kimi Antonelli won at Madring from second on the grid, extending his championship lead further. Lewis Hamilton, fourth on the grid, was the day’s first retirement.


Qualifying: Norris on Pole, Antonelli Alongside

Norris took pole position, with Antonelli second and Verstappen third. Hamilton was fourth and Leclerc fifth for Ferrari, with Russell sixth. Piastri qualified seventh, Lawson eighth, and Colapinto and Lindblad rounded out the top ten.

Race: Antonelli Wins from Second, Hamilton’s Race Ends Early

Antonelli converted second on the grid into victory. Verstappen made up one place from third to second, and Norris dropped from pole to third. Leclerc climbed from fifth to fourth, and Russell moved up from sixth to fifth, taking the fastest lap of the race along the way.

Lawson climbed from eighth to sixth, and Colapinto moved up from ninth to seventh. Piastri dropped from seventh on the grid to eighth, and Lindblad climbed from tenth to ninth. Hulkenberg rounded out the points in tenth after qualifying outside the top ten.

Hamilton, fourth on the grid, was the day’s first retirement. No Safety Car was needed. Mercedes claimed the fastest pitstop of the afternoon.

Antonelli’s win takes him to 292 points, a lead of 81 over the new second-placed driver. Russell’s fifth place is worth ten, taking him to 211 and second, with Hamilton’s retirement leaving him static on 191 in third.

In the constructors’, Mercedes extend their lead to 503 points on Antonelli and Russell’s combined 35. Ferrari move to 358 on Leclerc’s points alone, Hamilton’s retirement costing them a bigger haul. McLaren’s double from Norris and Piastri takes them to 306. Red Bull Racing sit on 230, with Verstappen’s second place among the weekend’s scoring, and Racing Bulls sit on 77 with Lawson and Lindblad both in the points.

The Wider Picture

Mercedes take another big result, Antonelli’s win and Russell’s fastest lap on the way to fifth extending the constructors’ lead further.

Ferrari had a difficult day, Hamilton’s retirement from fourth on the grid outweighing Leclerc’s points finish.
